Harbor Technology Pilings

E-mail PDF

For piles used in structurally supporting piers, wharves, docks, jetties, breakwaters, boardwalks, as well as used as fender piles for the Navy piers and Dept of Transportation bridges.  Both BarForce (plastic lumber with fiberglass bars) and FiberForce (plastic lumber with fiberglass fibers) are used as walers, chocks, blocks, and curbs in conjunction with our HarborPile fiberglassmarine piling to make a "complete non wood/non metallic fender system".

Hollow fiberglass composite piles (wall thicknesses from ¼" to 1") and one piece lengths of 100+ feet are easier to install and handle versus solid displacement piles.   Fiberglass pultruded compression tubes, fiberglass and polyethylene top caps, and steel pile shoes are available.  Also, an HDPE (high density polyethylene) outer sleeve is available for partial or entire coverage of the pile when extra abrasion and impact resistance is required.

Fiberglass Composite: Some History

Marine applications have many technologies to choose from when it comes to pilings.  Pressure Treated Wood, PT Pilings, concrete pilings, Encapsulated Wood, PVC, and Fiberglass.  Harbor Technologies designs and manufactures Fiberglass Composite Pilings.  This article will outline some of the structural and lifetime benefits of the Fiberglass Pile.

Although drawing glass into a very fine fiber was done in the 19th century or before, industrially produced fiberglass was invented in 1938 within Owens-Corning.  Initially used for insulation.  By the mid to late '50s fiberglass earned its respect as a building material for boats.  Since it will not rot like wood, nor corrode like metals it was the perfect material in the marine environment, especially salt water environment.

Today: A Highly Engineered Material
